Alessandro Messina is an Italian economist and manager.

Expert on banking, sustainability and nonprofit, he is Scientific Advisor and Lecturer on Nonprofit and Public Administration at the Faculty of Economics, University of Rome Tor Vergata, research group on Government & Social Entrepreneurship.

He has been:

Chief Executive Officer (General Manager) at Banca Eticasince June 2015 to October 2021; 

Head of Bank-Firm Relationships and Special Projects at Federcassethe Italian Federation of Co-operative Banks, which represents almost 400 local cooperative banks, leader in the credit market to small businesses, agriculture, cooperatives, nonprofits and social enterprises (2011-2015);

- in charge of the Credit Department at ABI, the Italian Banking Association (2008-2011);

- Director General at the Italian Ministry of Solidarity (2007-2008);

- Head of the “Autopromozione sociale” programme for the promotion of small enterprises at the Municipality of Rome, which won the 2006 edition of the European Enterprise Award assigned by the European Commission (2004-2007);

- President of the Ethical Finance Association in Italy (2002-2004);

- Director at Lunaria (2001-2004), NGO working in the field of international solidarity and volunteering, where he was also co-founder and researcher at Sbilanciamoci!, a civil society campaign for a sustainable use (in both social and environmental terms) of public funds;

- Researcher at ISTAT, on public expenditure and nonprofit institutions;

- Researcher at the University of Rome La Sapienza;

- Lecturer in several universities: Urbino, Ferrara, Cagliari, etc.;

co-founder and Board Member at The Hub Rome;

- Board Member at CAES Italia, insurance consortium for non profit organizations;

- Board Member at AltrEconomia, an indipendet media publisher on the issue of alternative-economy practices;

- Founder and Board Member at OBI-ONE, a consultancy for nonprofit and solidarity based enterprises.

He holds a Bachelor degree in Economics, full marks with honours (110/110 cum laude), from the University of Rome “La Sapienza” (1994), and a Master and fellowship in “Economics of financial markets”, from the LUISS Management School in Rome (1995).
